There’s a quiet confidence that radiates from JohnBlackMusic, a Lagos-based artist whose sound balances between trap’s raw emotion and R&B’s tender groove. Born Gyang John Danjuma in Jos, Plateau State, he carries the soul of the Berom hills into the pulse of the city—bridging old roots and new rhythms with ease.

From humble beginnings freestyling in church as a teenager to building a professional sound shaped by years in the studio, JohnBlack has crafted something rare: music that doesn’t just entertain, but speaks directly to the heart.
From Jos to Lagos: The Journey of a True Believer
JohnBlack’s musical story began in 2007, long before he had a microphone of his own. Alongside his friend Nenzee, he formed a group called NJ Young Stars, inspired by local producer Mandela, who gave them beats to freestyle on. Those early days in Jos were raw—handmade beats, choir rehearsals, and endless experimentation—but they laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to sound.
He recalls, “I discovered I had a special voice back in SS1. From then, I started hearing melodies in my head every day.”
That innate connection to melody has never left him. Even now, in Lagos’ creative sprawl, JohnBlack’s process remains simple: freestyle until something real surfaces, then build the song from there.
A Sound Built on Soul, Trap, and Truth
At his core, JohnBlackMusic is a storyteller. His sound floats between trap, R&B, and Afro-fusion—genres he bends effortlessly into one emotional experience. The influence of Akon’s smooth melodies, the bounce of Afrobeats, and the energy of modern trap all find a place in his catalog.
His lyrics often explore love, lifestyle, and the struggles that shape everyday life. But beyond themes, it’s the feeling that defines his music. Whether it’s the vulnerability in “Make Me Better” or the smooth confidence of “Roll With Me,” JohnBlack’s voice becomes a vessel—equal parts spiritual and streetwise.
His listeners cut across borders, religions, and age groups. “I make music for everyone,” he says. “For lovers, kids, Muslims, Christians. Anybody with a heart that feels something.”
The Independent Hustle
Behind the stage name is a determined entrepreneur. When he’s not in the studio, JohnBlack runs his own business—selling cars, e-bikes, and phone gadgets—funding his music and staying self-reliant. His independence isn’t just a status; it’s a philosophy.
He’s the type of artist who builds from the ground up—recording with close collaborators Slash Beat and Bobbery, pushing every release by himself, and treating every show like a chance to convert new believers.
“Doing different jobs to support my music hasn’t been easy,” he admits, “but it keeps me grounded. It makes the dream
